Why is QuickBooks Unable to Communicate with the Company File?

Before troubleshooting this error, it is important to understand why QuickBooks can’t connect with the company file. Below, we have listed the reasons behind this company file error, including QuickBooks error 3008.

  • Windows or third-party firewall settings block QuickBooks from accessing the network or company file.
  • Hosting is not turned on in the server, or the hosting settings are incorrect.

Solutions for the Inability to Communicate with the Company File

Solution 1: Set up your third-party firewall and Windows

Below are the steps that can be followed to configure the firewall for QuickBooks:

Step 1: Select QuickBooks Setup

  • Ensure that QuickBooks software is installed on your PC and has the latest updates applied to open the company file.
  • Log in to QuickBooks as an administrator with admin permissions.

Step 2: Quickly update your QuickBooks Interface files

If you can't establish a connection with QuickBooks or launch the connection, it may be because files are incompatible with QuickBooks.

To refresh it, follow the steps outlined below:

  • Safely back up the Company Data File.
  • Locate the file Reboot.bat (typically found in C:\Program Files\Intuit\QB).
  • Right-click on it to launch it as an administrator.
  • Reboot your PC and then attempt to connect your system to another.

Solution 2: Check the hosting

Only one computer should host the company file in a multi-user mode when using QuickBooks. Hosting is enabled by scanning the company file using the Database Server Manager.

Disable hosting on all workstations:

  • From the QuickBooks File menu, select Utilities.
  • Choose Stop Hosting Multi-User Access.
  • Confirm by clicking Yes on the confirmation message.

After checking all workstations, it is recommended that you go to the server computer and reset the hosting settings. The steps to follow are:

  • Open QuickBooks on the server system.
  • Go to the File menu and hover over the Utilities tab.
  • Click the Host Multi-User Access option if it is available. After doing this once more, choose Stop Hosting Multi-User Access. The multi-user mode will be reset as a result.
  • Now, repeat the process and choose Host Multi-User Access.
